PEARL BIRTHSTONE

June 08, 2019

PEARL BIRTHSTONE

Pearl is one of the three birthstones for June and perhaps the best-loved gem of all time. Pearls are pure and organic treasures from the Earth, residing in ponds, lakes, seas, and oceans. Pearls are almost as old as mankind and possibly the first true gem our ancestors used to adorn themselves with. Unlike faceted gemstones, a pearl is beautiful from the very beginning. Embodied by mystery and power, pearls occur in a wide variety of desirable colors, both natural and cultured.

Although white and cream pearls have remained a classic status symbol of wealth for thousands of years, appreciation has grown for natural, earth-tone hues and pearls in a variety of shapes, ranging from the perfect shining spheres, to lustrous baroque free forms, and unique keishi flakes. Of course, a remarkable and treasured characteristic of the pearl is the iridescent phenomenon known as orient.

Orient is one of the most beautiful and unique effects found on pearls. The pearls of the Persian Gulf were known as "Oriental Pearls" to Romans, and therefore the name "orient" was given to pearls that possessed a unique play of color on their surface. Pearl orient is complicated to explain, created in part by the nacre's thickness, sculptural lines, deep luster, surface purity, color, and reflections. All of these factors contribute to the pearl’s stunning display of subtle color variations while in motion. The more intense the effect, the more desirable the pearl.

Natural pearls form around a microscopic irritant in the bodies and mantle tissues of certain mollusks. Cultured pearls, grown by mollusk or oyster farmers, are the result of the deliberate insertion of a bead or piece of tissue that the mollusk coats with nacre. Cultured pearls are raised purposefully and require human care. An example of a cultured pearl is the well-known Freshwater pearl. Three popular types of saltwater cultured pearls with the desired orient effect are the Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian.

Pearls portray ultimate feminine energy and have long been associated with elegance and beauty. They are said to give the wearer a sense of calm, integrity, loyalty, truth and purity.

For those born in June, enjoy your pearl!  May it bring you elegance, truth, integrity, and so much more.

THE TUCSON TANGO
THE TUCSON TANGO

Gemstones from around the world in their various forms are inspiring, but I found my true inspiration within the souls of the people I had the pleasure of spending time with. It was a magical trip of friendship, laughter, and passion, so when the music stopped and I packed up my dancing shoes, well, the Tucson withdrawal was real.

2020, THE YEAR OF PERFECT VISION
2020, THE YEAR OF PERFECT VISION

January 06, 2020

Instead of making resolutions for the new year, I create one personal goal that revolves around one word. Last year's word of the year was "creation". I chose "creation" to challenge myself in various areas surrounding design, collaboration and creating opportunities. I gave myself permission to spend the year practicing spontaneity while taking bigger risks.
